Then nearly five years ago, she made her first mask for a costume party. She enjoyed the whole process of constructing the mask so much that she decided to make more of them. Again, drawing influence from nature, she began creating masks of animal faces, mythical creatures, and interpretations of earth elements such as fire and water.
In 2006, Heather caught the attention of the producers of HGTV’s show That’s Clever, which highlights the creations of artists all around the country. A crew came to Connecticut later that year and filmed a segment for the show of her making a lion mask step by step and another of her making a geisha doll out of a clothespin and origami paper. Having to think about exactly how she made her masks helped her discover some new ways to improve the way she makes them. Being able to explain her creative thought process gave her insight into how she likes to work.
Filming the show was an exciting experience, one that left her wanting to show people how to make more of her craft projects. She began filming her own videos of unique projects that she makes using recycled and all-natural materials and posting them online. She has received very positive feedback from viewers who have made some of her crafts, making it a very satisfying endeavor for her. Coming up with new ideas for
these videos has given her yet another outlet for her creativity that she wishes to pursue further in the future.
