Beginner's Illustration Workshop

6-week course

Learn basic illustration techniques and how they apply across several mediums. 1-1/2 or 2 hour sessions meet once a week and materials will be required as the course progresses. A fun and interesting workshop for budding young artists who are just discovering their talents, as well as those serious about honing their skills for a career in the arts.

Ceramics: Hand-Building for Beginners
In this class we will be experimenting with a variety of hand-building techniques including slump projects, pinch pots and coil pots along with others. You will be taught the basics in working and creating with clay in an enjoyable and creative way. This course will also include glazing and kiln firing. Class suitable for ages 14+.

Participants will begin with world culture, tradition, and art history to create their own works with drawing, painting, and collage. Multiple work materials allow participants further experimentation with world themes and traditions. The use of recycled materials reinforces global awareness.
For their own use and to share, students will be asked to bring in recycled boxes, newspapers, magazines, etc.

Learn the basics of Watercolor painting – at the end of this course you will have completed a beautiful painting suitable for framing! It's fun and easy – learn a few tricks along the way! If you are already a painter- or if you have never painted before you will enjoy learning a new and different way of painting in watercolor. This is a 5 week course – classes will be 2 hours each week.

COMIC ART WORKSHOP

Back in the 1970’S, the late Dick Giordano and Artist Frank McLaughlin established “The Comic Art Workshop”... a place where budding cartoonists and comic freaks could go once a week to learn the techniques of comic art fromworking pros. The response was immediate and overwhelming!

In accordance to state law: although our facility surpasses all required building and fire codes, classes are limited to teens. The assembly of younger students is disallowed due to the lack of a sprinkler system (we are currently seeking a grant for this)

Renovations on the new “Valley Center of the Arts” (formerly the Hotchkiss Hose Co. firehouse on Caroline Street) are completed and the building has undergone its final inspections! We are now officially open for business. Studio spaces are now available for rent and programs are being announced.
The arts council plans to work with the local school's art programs to determine how the VAC can help in the classroom and what courses will be offered at the art center. The building is in close proximity to the VAC's Gallery@37 as well as the stores & restaurants located in the downtown area which is slowly being transformed into an art and cultural center. The art center is also close to highway access, the local bus route and the Metro North train station.
